Deelay Ceelay rocks the library!

Top 5 Reasons Why the Library is Especially Awesome Friday, June 4

1) It will be loud
2) It will make you want to dance
3) It will be colorful
4) It will be electroni-rock with crazy visuals, like nothing you've ever seen or heard at a library before
5) It will be completely and utterly free

One of Portland's top bands, Deelay Ceeley, will be playing in the Library Community Room from 7-8:30. Just follow the sound of the live drumming and be there! Your Library Needs You!

Want to get out of the house this summer, help out the library and get something to put on your resume? The library is looking for a few good teens for the Teen Summer Volunteering program. Get an inside peek at the workings of the library, hang out with other teens and do a good deed.

What will you be doing? Shelving, shelving and shelving! You might also find books, help out at programs and help staff with projects.

Sound interesting? Than check here for information about signing up or ask next time you're in the library.

Retrogaming

Teen and adult Retrogaming is Friday, May 14 from 5-7 in the Technology Room (the computer classroom on the second floor of the library). We'll be playing online emulators of games from way back in the 80s and 90s. A vintage good time will be had by all! The first to make it across the Oregon Trail wins a prize. If you dare to challenge me at Arkanoid II, you will know how it feels to be pwned old-school. I should warn you, I actually owned an Apple II GS.

Can't make it to the program? No problem. I've pasted links to some of the games we'll be playing below:

Virtual Apple- Depending on which game is selected, may need to install a plug-in. Has Oregon Trail and Arkanoid II. Almost every Apple II game ever made!
Virtual Atari- no downloading required, complete with images of classic game cassettes, must hit “Reset” to start games.
Classic Arcade Games- flash games do not require download, includes Mario, Zelda, Tetris, Pong, etc.
Classic Arcade Pack-Includes, Frogger, Pong, Tetris, Pacman and others, requires download, nice looking and sounding games

Star Guard-Requires unzipping and downloading
Hero Core-Requires unzipping and downloading, fun and cheesy story

Spelunky-Requires unzip and download. Nice tutorial to introduce controls.

City Contests

Does you dream of political greatness? Get a headstart with the City of Tigard's poster/essay/video contest "If I Were Mayor" going on now through May 28th. Check the City's page for the full set of rules and how-to's. Tigard students (including homeschoolers) in grades 4th-12th can enter!
Also, the City is sponsoring a sidewalk art contest to decorate the new Burnham Street/Ash Street sidewalks. Students in 6th-8th can try their hand at creating a design for a concrete stamp depicting either the Western Pond Turtle or the Northern Red-Legged Frog. Check the City's page if you, like me, have no idea what either of those look like (and for more information!).

Fans of Roland Smith!

Have you heard that Roland Smith will be coming to the library in June to talk about Tentacles, his newest book? Well he is. And we'll be giving away 50 copies of the book! I was reading Roland's blog today and learned of another opportunity to get a free copy of one of his books. Once Roland's Facebook page gets 5000 fans, he will chose ten lucky fans to get signed copies of Cryptid Hunters. Which is, coincidentally, the BookTRON book for May. Become a fan for a chance to win!
