New App for Teen Book

I love that authors are exploring how to bring their stories and characters beyond the pages of their books, and even their websites. Cathy's Book is a mystery that invited readers to investigate the many clues included with the book, as well as those found on the website and through telephone numbers readers can call. And now readers can download an iPhone or iPod Touch App to get even more involved in the mystery! Rad.
If you're a mystery reader or would like to try a new genre, stop by the YA Room and check out our mystery book display. You can also pick up a Sherlock Holmes movie poster behind the YA Reference Desk.

BookTRON Battles it Out

BookTRON was divided this month between members who LOVED City of Bones with a Twilight-like passion, others who were sort of meh, and one who genuinely thought it sucked. If you like books with romance, mysteries, magic, missing parents and vampire vs. werewolf brawls, then give City of Bones a try and let us know what you think.

Here's what BookTRON had to say:
  • It was kind of boring because it was like a lot of other books.
  • I liked it because each character stood out and was unique.
  • I liked that the story didn't exclude gays, and all the guys were hot.
  • I couldn't connect to the main character, which made the book unbearable.
  • I really, really, really liked it, because the beginning. middle and end were all good, unlike some books that drag in parts.
  • It was exciting and had a lot of action.
  • It made the reader curious about everything that was hapenning to the main character.
  • The whole time I was thinking, what's going to happen next?

Best Teen Books

There are lots of lists floating around with picks of the best teen books of the year. At the top of my list (mostly 2009, some earlier but I read them this year) are Liar by Justine Larbalestier, King of the Screwups by K.L. Going, Flygirl by Sherri Smith, and The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan. (Of course, I have a lot more, but I tried to limit myself!)

What were yours? Comment, please!

Creative Gift Making

Nothing says unique like something you make yourself. With some simple sewing skills, fabric scraps and odds-n-ends, you can make fabulous creations. A book and some instructions don't hurt either, especially when the books are as fantastic as these three.

softies by Therese Laskey (New YA 745.5924 LAS) Just look at the cover! And yes, patterns are included. From a "Ms. Green Tea Bag" to the "Lonely Dollop," these are fun and funny plushies.

Cute Stuff by Aranzi Aronzo (New YA 745.5 CUT) Yes, these are cute, very cute. A little bit manga, a lot of cute.

Stray Sock Sewing by Daniel (New YA 745.5924 TA) Everyone has stray socks. Transform them into crazy creatures. I am pretty much smitten with the little red pig.
