Old Books Go Digital

Ever signed up for an email account, or bought tickets online and had to verify that you are a real person by typing in letters or numbers that look a distorted? If so, you've probably helped digitize old books and newspapers.

This article from NPR talks with the creator of reCAPTCHA about the hows and whys of this cool project. So far Internet users have helped transcribe text equivalent to 17,600 books. Its work that humans can process but computers cannot. You can also check out reCAPTCHA's website for more information.

So next time you're asked to read/type a security word you can wonder what you've helped to digitize!
